I’m a web designer and for a while I have been advertising my website as a company, would it be better to advertise me as a freelancer rather than a company?
Depends on your target audience. Small mom and pop shops would likely prefer an individual over a company since it gives them the feeling of having more control. Also, they know they aren’t paying for corporate bloat and overhead.
Corporations are more likely to like working with companies.
I used to work for a design "firm" that had 5-10 designers. It was really a collection of independent contractors like yourself. They worked very hard to present themselves as a firm rather than a series of contractors. This included legalese, lengthy contracts, iterative bid proposals, sales presentations, etc. The price of the contracts was very high, but it was also a ton of work for a small group of people to pull it off.
Since there’s only one of you, I would stick with being an individual contractor or freelancer. Really, that’s what you are and your clients will find out sooner or later. If they feel misled you’ll lose trust.
My dad is considering getting his own website and domain for his company because he thinks he may be able to get more job offers. He does concrete work. I was looking for a company that’d be able to help us get started and I found a website that’s called hit web design..has anyone ever heard of it? If so, is that a good company?
This is the link for their site

We would be getting the basic start up package which they said would cost roughly $239 and a monthly fee of $19.99 for hosting.
Is there any other web page design company that you would recommend…if it matters we’re in the chicagoland area. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
Hi!
Their hosting is very expensive.
I build my first website from scratch and paid only for hosting. ($3.50 a month).
I am sure your dad can run the website himself and not too pay too much for hosting.
I use several hostings but we prefer and recommend this one:
http://tinyurl.com/2fl5deu
They have been there since 1998. So they offer great features and support + very reliable and affordable.
They also register domain names. If you register a domain name and buy their hosting, your domain name is FREE.
So here are my steps when I started my first website:
1 Come up with an idea of your website.
2 Register your domain name.
I use this provider:
http://tinyurl.com/2fl5deu
As I said before, if you register a domain name and buy their hosting, your domain name is FREE.
3 Choose a Web Host
Since they give a free domain name, I buy their hosting.
http://tinyurl.com/2fl5deu
Now they have a promotion: Only $3.50 a month.
4 Design your Web Pages
I find free website templates with help of Google search.
For example:
http://www.freelayouts.com/websites/html-templates
http://www.freewebsitetemplates.com/
Then I edit them with Kompozer http://www.kompozer.net/download.php , a free WYSIWYG web editor.
5 Upload your templates and files to your website
I use http://filezilla-project.org FileZilla FTP Client. It’s FREE!
6 Test Your Website
I use these two major browsers: Internet Explorer and Firefox.
7 Share your website with your friends and colleagues!
Good Luck!
I need to build web pages that are only accessible by logging into an account. What is the best web solution to this?

The company that I am looking at is a data center design and mission-critical power company.
There are many of them out in the world. What are you specifically looking to do?
If it is just the design of a very basic site then I recommend doing a google local directory search and look for someone with a very high rating. If you are building something more complex, or don’t really know what you want… Well then I would start with identifying your needs. What is the goal of the website? How much time and money can you devote to it, both during the development and in the long term updating of it. Elance.com is a great place to look for designers, you get to see many bids from a ton of great talent, look at their portfolios and ratings and then choose the one that works for you.
Would this break the law and how would it affect the web designer?
If the person or company has made it clear that their video is copyrighted then they are likely to take legal action. If someones video is copyrighted and you are ignoring that fact, then you are eligible to be taken to court which will most likely result in a hefty fine. If you were to post a film online, then that film company will be able to sue you an awful lot of money as they will have many lawyers and a lot of power. However, if the video is not copyrighted and you are able to prove that, then the person is not able to do a thing.
I hope this helps.
I am starting a web design business and I am not sure. I just want to design, I don’t want to do any webmastering for anyone. I just want to sell a design. Is this what most web designers do? Or do they also set it up and get it online and running for them?
I agree with Jay above, there are far too many "just designers" already. Your best bet is to find a specialty and work for a company that uses you for just that. To be a generalist and make decent money now you need to know at least a dozen languages and be fluent with Flash and AS3 just to cover your bases.
