Suggestion for free WSYWIG web page designer?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under web page designers | 5 Comments »

I would like some suggestions for good, free webpage designers. I know Word has the option (but is limited and messy). Not interested in suggestions for site-builder tools like geocities, it has to be an independent tool. This is for charity which is why it has to be free. Thanks.

There are two I would recommend checking out, both free software:

KompoZer – this is Nvu’s successor. (GPL, MPL)
http://kompozer.net/

Amaya – very strict debugging routines for finding errors in web pages. (W3C License)
http://www.w3.org/Amaya/

Please, do not use a word processor to create web pages, their HTML code is always bloated and difficult to maintain.

for all you web designers out there, is there any free online web page designing software that you’d reccomend

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under web page designers | 1 Comment »

Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express.

Get it at www.asp.net

ASP.NET is the ONLY way to go now-a-days for developement, IMHO. Of course… the PHP/OpenSource/Linux guys will disagree… but then, their stuck back in the 70s lol. (j/k guys – well, not really… unless you work for me LOL).

Web designers, what hosting companies do you use and how much do you charge for a basic 5 page website?

Posted by admin on February 17th, 2010 and filed under web page designers | 4 Comments »

I am thinking of starting a web design company but I am not sure what to charge and whether hosting/domain names should be included in the price. There are so many designers out there with different packages that I’m not sure what the "going" rate is.
Do you have maintanance contracts with your clients and if so, how much do you charge? Sorry for all the questions, I’m just trying to get all the info possible.
Thanks

I have used a lot of hosts (godaddy, cphosting, nomonthlyfees, bluehost). My favorite right now is bluehost- it costs more than the others but offers great support, and best of all, free addon domains, so I can host 3 of my sites with one host. Cphosting was pretty good- almost as cheap as godaddy, good service, and offers password protected directories, which godaddy does not. (I frequently do the "proofing" test site as a pass protected area before making a site public) Godaddy is good for something inexpensive.

You may want to offer a choice to the customer- a basic package (eg. a 5 page site with some template-y layout but customized banner and colors) for a set price, or a custom per-hour rate for a more advanced and customized site.

I’d say look at some of the following links, determine how much you NEED to make to pay your bills, and then tack on extra if you think your skills merit it. Also, bear in mind that you can always change your rate- mine gets upped every January.

Some people like to charge per page, but I prefer to charge per hour. I usually ask for as many details as possible (this should not be an inconvenience for the client since they will have to do this at some stage in the process regardless). Then based on that I’ll state a range of hours I expect it to take, eg. 15-20 hours, so it has a cushion.

I prefer the hourly approach because all pages are not created equal :-P , some sites require more customization of graphics and content than others.

I don’t include the hosting/domain in the price, since not all clients want to use the same companies, thus there are price differences. However, if you plan to handle the hosting and domain name registration for them (if they’ll provide the sensitive credit card/personal info) then you may prefer to just include it for simplicity’s sake.

My maintenance works the same… hourly, since the amount of maintenance can vary, that way they aren’t paying for work I don’t do, or underpaying for work I do do. :-)

If you do agree to maintenance (it can be a pain with some clients, I should warn you), or even if you don’t, it’s good to use contracts to protect both yourself and the client. These are easily found online by the way- just customize them a little. (Personally I prefer to work on the honor system, but if I worked with a lot of strangers I’d go the contract route for sure.)

Here are some interesting sites that can help you determine your rates:

Rate calculator-
http://www.sitepoint.com/article/freelance-pricing-1-set-rate

According to this page (someone got the info from dice.com though) http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=139097
its average of $43 for under one year, and $51 for one year.

How much does it cost to design a small web page with flash animations for small businesses in the USA?

Posted by admin on February 15th, 2010 and filed under web page designers | 2 Comments »

I live in Central America, And I know of very good web designers and programmers who – I bet -, would charge much less than in the States. All we need is bridge between producers over here and clients over there. But want to be sure about the price ranges.

Ricardo,

There are ways for Central American web designer/developers to get jobs from US companies. This is the ongoing trend with Eastern European and Southeast Asian countries. The site I use for outsourcing these job is: www.elance.com

I have used them for logo designs, web developments, etc. You can have people sign up with them.

If I were you, this is what I would do. You can be their middleman for this. The way you can help them out and for you to make money is this. For elance account, I belive you need to pay them a subscription fee per year. You can set up your company, pay the fee, and have the web designers/developers work for your company.

This way, they are your independent contractors and both are happy making money.

As for the elance… I have only used them for minor things. I do not know how much money is to be made or how much work you will get out of it… That’s your job to find out and run the numbers/figures.

Good luck!

If I want to be a web page designer would i make good money and what would my major be? Help please?

Posted by admin on February 10th, 2010 and filed under web page designers | 2 Comments »

I’m thinking that I want to be a web page designer. Some helpful information on how much i would make and what my major should be would be much appreaciated!!! also what would my official career/job title be? like a specialist or whatever. THANKS!!!

That’s called "Multimedia and Graphic Design" with specialization in web programming/design.
You could take that in great Technology and Art schools like Devry University or Ringling College of Art in Florida.

This particular field is the future and is in increasing demand. I know people who do computer animation/graphic design/web design that earn $100-350,000 a year (which is a LOT)

I’m moving towards computer animation. Wish you the best! You’re choosing a great and fun field that’s still evolving. :)
