I have a new business that I need a logo design and there is a web site where you give the name and concept. Then, (hopefully) several designers will place their design on the site for you to choose from and purchase.

The site your looking for is http://www.99designs.com

My web programmer quit unexpectedly. What files and information should I request?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under web programmers | 3 Comments »

The site is about 75% done, and there is coding he’s completed but not made live yet. What typical files and information should I request to make sure I have what I need to move forward with a new programmer?

Just ask for EVERYTHING concerning your site. When you get it, open the file named index. and then go through the rest of the pages. If something doesn’t look the same, then you probably don’t have everything.

You should get HTML files, CSS files, image files, probably some photoshop files, javascript, and if there is any server side, PHP, or ASP.

Also, send me a message if you’re looking for a new one. :)

what is the best software for font designing for the web?

1.what is the best software for font designing for the web

2.what is the best color profile for the web designing in photoshop

1. Don’t even TRY to develop your own font for the web! Browsers have their OWN fonts included, you can’t add a font to a browser, and you can barely control the font used by a browser!
2. RGB standard, then save in JPEG or GIF (you can use PNG, but it won’t show on old browsers – Tough luck!).

Web Hosting Solutions Please….?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under web solutions | 4 Comments »

I use a web hosting service at the moment that costs me £25 a year which is to much…i want a new service provider who is cheaper. I need to upload web files to it. can you please tell m a good website that is really cheap but still has a good service ? cheers ! :)

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months’ time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.

I also live in UK and use following webhosting and I will recommend them as they are excellent.

Hostmonster http://www.hostmonster.com/track/ryukenden/

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 300000 MB (300 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Is there a web design site where I cut and paste my document to create a web page?

I prefer a free site, that would be good for an educational resource webpage, not a school or class page buiding site.

You can try a number of free Google Applications. I would try Google Docs (http://docs.google.com/) or you can use Google Pages which allows you to create actual websites for free (http://pages.google.com/)

you will have to sign up for a gmail account first (Free also!)

Is it necessary to be artistic to be a web designer?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under web designer | 8 Comments »

How necessary is it to be artistic to qualify for web design? I am creative but lack artistic skills such as drawing, painting etc. I have designed web sites before and they were very presentable. As an official full-time web designer, how important would it be to be artistic, or would i be able to get by?

I think being ‘creative’ helps, as well as knowing code and having a grasp of design. Drawing and painting are not necessary as much as design is. I am a fine artist that learned design and I’m a multimedia designer (including web). Knowing design software; Photoshop, Illustrator, ImageReady/fireworks and being able to create images; buttons, backgrounds, banner ads, etc. doesn’t have much to do with painting per se.

Knowing artist tools and techniques -and- being able to code does put you in a unique position though and makes your skill set more attractive.

The less a ‘job’ (web design in this case) has to be piece milled out because you can only provide a portion of the required work, the better.

Having creative ‘hand skills’; drawing and painting, goes a long way.

Can you take web design and graphic design classes at the same time?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2010 and filed under web design | 3 Comments »

Is it possible to take web design and graphic design classes at the same time? Also, for schools like "The Art Institute", how many classes can you take?

If you mean: Is it morally acceptable? Are the two topics inter-relatable? Then yes, of course you can take both classes at the same time! If you are specifically asking about a school such as "The Art Institute" then the best thing for you to do is to look up the phone number for the branch you intend on attending classes at, call them, and ask directly– all schools play by different rules. Remember to ask questions directly whenever you can and to not be shy for not knowing. They should be more than happy to assist you with class schedules, credits per semester, and so on and so forth.

I however would advise you to avoid attending any of "The Art Institutes." The label "Institute" is tricky and does not ensure a quality education… In which case you should also factor in the cost of attendance.

Anyhow, just call and ask and you should be fine.
